“Segmented woodturning is much more than gluing together pieces of wood into a bowl. It is about creating exciting objects that challenge you and stimulate the interest and enjoyment of others. It can be a real opportunity to express oneself with very few limitations. This activity requires extremely precise woodworking skills and often requires a little inventiveness. You have unlimited choices regarding size, shape, and color combinations. The possibilities are endless.-----Malcolm Tibbetts---”
All carved pieces are finished with 12 coats of handrubbed tung oil. Then, a block of beeswax is pressed against the them as it turns on the lathe. The heat friction from the bowl turning melts the beeswax covering them with a white film of wax. After waxing, a soft white cloth is pressed against the turning bowl creating a hot glass like finish to the touch. The patina is very smooth.
